Browsing For A Terrific Movie? Check Out These Remarkable Movie Summaries
Never before has it been so excellent to be a film connoisseur. Back in the day the only way that you could even see a movie was to visit the theater. Later on, videos came out and you could get a video at the store but the film that you wanted may have been out-of-stock and you still had to wait. You also needed to make sure that you avoided any late fees by making sure that you got the film back to the store on time. Now you can get the films by mail, but it is still a waiting game.
The Prince and the Showgirl – Reasonably decent but slow moving comedy of saucy American show gal Monroe being courted by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) throughout the’11 coronation of George V. Filmed in England, with marvelous performances by Monroe and Olivier. Cast includes Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Jeremy Spencer, and Richard Wattis. (117 minutes,’57)
Believe in Me – Donovan moves to a small Oklahoma town in’64 to take a teaching job, although when he arrives he finds out he’s been assigned to coach the girls basketball team. What is more, the girls have no self respect and little assistance from the school. Authentic heartland tale ascends above its recognizable underdog formula. Donovan and Mathis as his supportive spouse are first rate. Cast includes Jeffrey Donovan, Samantha Mathis, Bruce Dem, Bob Gunton, Heather Matarazzo, Alicia Lagano, and Chris Ellis. (108 minutes, 2007)
Rhapsody in Blue – Hollywood biography of George Gershwin is largely fiction, although comes off better than most other composer biographies, seizing Gershwin’s exhilaration for his work, and some of his innermost conflicts. Cast includes Robert Aida, Joan Leslie, Alexis Smith, Oscar Levant, Charles Coburn, Hazel Scott, and Al Jolson. (139 minutes,’45)
Like Water for Chocolate – Striking and sensuous film from a work of fiction by Laura Esquivel set in the early part of the 20th century – a youthful girl’s life is conditioned by her solemn and obstinate mom, who treats her terribly. Spectacular storyline, not without humor, with an outstanding cast and a top of the line performance from lead actress Cavazos. Cast includes Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Tome, Mario Ivan Martinez, and Ada Carrasco. (113 minutes,’92)
Far and Away – A scrappy Irish tenant farmer hooks up, in uncertain style, with the equally energetic daughter of a wealthy landowner, and together they journey to America to seek out their final fortune in the’93 Oklahoma land rush. Outstanding platform for Tom and Nicole, who are both attractive and involving; the dilemma is a severe dearth of decent dialogue to fill the gaps between fight scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes,’92)
Above the Law – This is Steven Segal’s breakout motion picture. He plays a Chicago Policeman who takes matters into his own hands. As the title implies, he is ‘above the law’. He uses his large body and martial arts skills to inflict destruction on the bad guys. Stars include Steven Segal, Pam Grier, and Sharon Stone. (1988 Action)
