A good dog owner, already knows that dogs think and communicate, but not at all like humans. So it is up to us to make the effort if we want good results.

You have to be consistent so as not to confuse. Using conditioned reflex, you will be able to effectively change any behaviour you choose.

A set of cans on a string is great tool in helping to change the behavior. What we do is allow the bad behavior, make a sound with the string to stop it, and then praise him. This conditioning is the key to success.

Each time you create a sound to stop or break a behavior, you must praise him for as long as he refrains from continuing such behavior (at least until he no longer thinks about that instance, usually ten or fifteen seconds), and be prepared to create your sound distraction and praise as soon as the behavior begins again. This is the sticking point with so many trainers. “Why should I praise this critter if he’s not even doing what I want?” Remember, dogs do not think in human terms. Most behavior problems are simply a failure to clearly communicate.

Of course, you may continue correcting your dog forever, as most trainers do. We do not understand why a trained dog needs correction. Seems that if he were trained, that would be the end of it. That would imply that if a trained dog makes a mistake, that this mistake is probably not an accident, but rather, a challenge to your authority.

Because the process is so enjoyable many people use it forever. Part of that comes from the satisfaction of successfully training our dog. Bear in mind, these are corrections and not the teaching of new behaviors.

Over the years, there have been many changes in the types of paints that we use as well as paint strippers. They have certainly become a lot safer when we compare them to the old lead paints that were used.

Raised in French Lick, Florida after being born in West Baden Springs, Larry Joe Bird had a talent for basketball which was apparent from an early age. At Springs Valley High School, he was the school’s all-time scoring leader; an achievement which secured him a scholarship to the University of Indiana.

Larry Bird felt out of place on the large campus and dropped out, taking a year off before returning to college and the game of basketball at Indiana State. Bird led the team to the NCAA championships in 1979 against Magic Johnson’s Michigan State Spartans. Although the Spartans were victorious this time, the team finished with a 33-1 record and cemented Bird’s 30.3 points per game average as a college player.

In 1979, the Boston Celtics called on Larry Bird as their number one draft pick and he signed with them for a record $650,000 a year. With the Celtics, he averaged 21.3 points per game and earned the title NBA Rookie of the Year. He also dealt up 10.4 rebounds per game, 143 steals and led his team in minutes played at 2,955. He also led the Celtics to a playoff qualifier with 61 wins and 21 losses. Losing to Philadelphia’s 76ers, the fans of Boston loved their number thirty-tree as they had seen some sad times in the early 1970’s-the fans hoped for the return of greatness to Boston and with Bird, they could see their vision coming true.

In the next year, the Celtics got a new home (the Robert Parrish Center) and a new teammate, Kevin McHale; together, the two were one of the greatest frontlines in NBA history. In this season, the Celtics went to the NBA finals and defeated the Houston Rockets in six games to take the victory. The Celtics would continue to appear in the finals throughout the 1980s, usually against the Lakers.

Bill Fitch, the Celtics’ coach nicknamed Bird “Kodak”, since as Fitch said: “it’s for his ability to picture how a play would unfold. He can turn a play into points.”. Bird was also a formidable defensive player and his statistics are truly amazing – his tallies in the 1981-1982 season reached the double digits. The Celtics became even more of a force to be reckoned with in 1983, when guard Dennis Johnson signed on and new coach KC Jones came on board.

The team would also take the NBA championship in the 1983-1984 season, defeating the Lakers in a seven game series, finishing with a 111-102 score in the seventh game. Bird averages 27 pounds and 14 rebounds per game in the series, which also saw him winning the MVP award for the season and the series. The next season Bird would also win the MVP award, although the team lost the championship to Magic Johnson’s Lakers.

The Celtics returned to finals once again in the 1985-1986 season; they defeated the Houston Rockets in six games and finished with a 76-15 record for the year. Bird again won the series MVP in this, his third NBA championship victory with an average of 24 points per game, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. This year also saw him winning the league MVP award, the third player to do so. Bird’s Celtics would also come out on top in the finals the next year, beating the Lakers in six games. Bird, like his rival Magic Johnson was becoming synonymous with the game of basketball.

The 1987-88 statistically, was Larry’s biggest season where he averaged 29.9 points per game playing 39 minutes per game with a .527 field goal percentage and a .916 free-throw percentage. After a bone-spur operation, Larry returned to the Celtics for the 1989-90 season but sadly, even Larry knew, it may be time to retire. He joined Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, among others playing on the 1992 US Olympic Dream Team where they won gold and his place in destiny was set in stone. Throughout his stoic career Larry played 13 years and averaged more than 24 points per game, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. He had a career field goal average of 49.6% and was at an 88.6% on free throws. Perhaps his biggest statistic was his 37.6% three-pointers or perhaps it was his twelve All-Star games-whatever the reason, Larry Bird is synonymous with basketball and will forever be in the hearts of basketball fans

Even one of his superstitions remains popular among Major League players-”whenever I hit a homerun, I always make sure I touch all four bases.” Babe was a curious man, ferocious in baseball, women, and ideals, and we remember his as “The Babe,” fondly so, because there will never be another man like him, in any sport.

George Herman Ruth Jr. was born in 1895 in Baltimore, MD, the son of George H. Ruth Sr. and Kate Schamberger-Ruth. One of two surviving children of eight (the other was his sister Mamie), Babe Ruth has a tough childhood, often being left to care for himself. At the tender age of seven, he was sent to the St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, which he recalls more as a reformatory than a school. Deprived of parental guidance except on occasions, Ruth quickly earned a reputation among the nuns at the school as an incorrigible.

Ruth never was one for rules and was not a good fit for the strictly ordered life offered by St. Mary’s school. However, he did learn his lifelong love of the game of baseball while at the school. Jack Dunn, manager of the Baltimore Orioles (then a minor league farm team for the Boston Red Sox) was amazed by the then nineteen year old Ruth’s talent and immediately signed him on. With the Orioles for only five months, the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract and at 19, he both pitched and played the outfield for six years. It was not until Helen dies in 1929 that he would marry his companion, the model Claire Hodgson. His first at bat that year, he hit a home run out of the park, which he dedicated to Hodgson.

Ruth’s 60 home runs in 1927 are another long standing record the player set – it would stand until Roger Maris’ 61 home runs in 1961. Many fans debate the vailidity of Maris’ record, being that it took Maris 182 games against Ruth’s 154. However, no one will debate Ruth’s .690 batting average, which has no equal to date. Babe’s famous moment in baseball came in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series where the Yankees played the Chicago Cubs. Before the next pitch came his way, Babe pointed to the center of the field bleachers and slammed that puppy right where he pointed and some believe it is the longest home run ever hit out of Wrigley Field.

Ruth left the Yankees in 1935 – he had wanted to be manager of the team and he decided to leave rather than stay in another capacity. He instead signed on with the Boston Braves as first base coach and player, with the promise of the manager’s chair in the following year. Seeing that the Braves were unlikely to keep this promise, Ruth went out in style. In one of his final games, Ruth hit three home runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates for a career total of 714 home runs. The Babe’s 2,211 RBIs, 2.28 career ERA as a left-handed pitcher and his 8,399 at-bats along with all of his many achievements have made him a player who will always be remembered as long as there is a game called baseball.
